·         BSHG will ratify SGPPH’s affiliation at its AGM at the end of August.  Subscriptions will be renewed from July 2009 at £15 for all members.  Action: JL.  In April 2010 BSHG will collect £55 from the SGPPH members who are also members of BSHG and £15 from the non-members.  From April 2011 all SGPPH members will pay the BSHG membership fee of £55.

·         Name change: The name will be changed to “Genomics & Health Policy Society”.  The members will be informed before the AGM when this change will be formally ratified.  Action: AH. The actual change of name on documents will take place when new webpages are created for SGPPH on the BSHG website.  Action: JL

3.                   SGPPH Events

i)    Spring Meeting:  AH noted that this had successfully taken place and that the evaluation sheets received were in the majority very positive.

ii)    BSHG Conference

·         Plenary session: MH and SH with T Cook are involved in this session.  It is hoped to have lunch available in the session.  Action: MH, SH & AH.

·         Flyer: Once the speakers have been finalised for the AGM, flyers will be printed up professionally and distributed in the BSHG delegate packs, as in previous years.  Action: JL

·         AM, AH and Sowmiya Moorthie will produce this.  AH to circulate the draft poster when ready.  Action: AH, AM   JL to organise the printing. Action: JL

iii)   ESRC Update

·         LJ has discussed SGPPH’s possible participation in the conference with their administrator, Flo Ticehurst.  AH to find out progress on this issue from LJ.  Action: AH

iv)   4th AGM

·         The topic will be ‘Genetics & Health Promotion’.  6 speakers have been approached, 2 have agreed to speak to date.

·         IR had indicated his intention of resigning from the council.  AH, AK and HB are happy to continue as council members and extend their 3 year terms.  To ask the membership for volunteers to join the council.  Action: AH/JL

·        Secretary’s role: AH will step down after the AGM in November.  None of the council members present offered to take up this role.  AH will circulate the job description.  Action: AH.  Suitable candidates in the current list of members will be identified and approached over this issue.  Action: HB, JL.

 v)    Spring Meeting 2010

  • A (very) provisional topic of individualised medicine/ personalised decision making – to include three strands was agreed:

o        An analysis of whether personalised genetics has fulfilled expectations/promise

o        Personalised decision making (including public health aspects)

o        The barriers which institutions (notably the NHS) would have to overcome and systems which would need to be adopted to enable personalised decision making to take place within the NHS. This could include considerations of family decision making in genetics services for example. The Nuffield Council are currently consulting on personalised medicine so might be a possible contributor.

  • DM is to approach SH with a view to taking the lead in organising this meeting.  Action: DM, SH.  A subcommittee possibly including AK and AM would be formed in due course.

  • The date and venue for this meeting also needs to be decided so that publicity can be available about it at the 4th AGM.

  • Other BSHG affiliates have 1 big spring conference per year, sometimes lasting 2 days, with a smaller AGM at the BSHG annual conference.  So the usual format of SGPPH’s spring meeting could change.  Also it may be desirable to incorporate more discussion time and/or breakout groups into the meeting.

    4.         AOB

  • There was none.
