Welcome & Apologies

2.                   SGPPH 4th AGM
i)    Theme:  It was decided that the theme would be “Genetics & Health Promotion”, to include a general overview and more specific technical and policy aspects.  The morning session would be devoted to technical issues, such as genetics and obesity, smoking, alcohol, environment and exercise, and the afternoon to policy issues.   It was noted, in this regard, that Alison Harvey had worked on the issue of the role of government to influence change, and where the state and public health programmes’ responsibilities start and end; also that the King’s Fund had written a report on socio-economic class and behaviour which could lead to a speaker.

Possible speakers could include:
Peter O’Donnelly: from Oxford to give a general technical overview, to include SNPs.

T Marteau: or her colleage, Susan Mitchie, on psychological/behavioural aspects.

Steve O’Railly
: on genetics and obesity.

The lady who gave a good talk at the Newmarket meeting:
Action: HB to establish who this was exactly, and also consider other potential speakers from the Nutrigenomics event.

Sonia Smith
: from London on genetics and smoking.

Steven John: from Cambridge worked on a public health ethics report with the Nuffield Council.

ii)    Subcommittee:  All the participants of this meeting agreed to form a subcommittee for the AGM.  They agreed to consider potential speakers over the coming month.

iii)   Next meeting of the Subcommittee: This would take place on 28 April at 0930 by telephone conference call, to follow on from the Spring conference’s subcommittee meeting.  Action: JL to email all to confirm.

iv)   Venue: It was agreed to confirm the provisional booking of a room at the NCVO for Wednesday 11 November 2009.  If more space was required a theatre style set up (70 people) could be used instead of the usual cabaret (52 people).  Action: JL to book. 3.

BSHG Conference – SGPPH’s Session
AH said that this would take place on Tuesday 1 September from 1 – 2pm.  She would see if lunch could be brought into the room.  Action: AH.  MH and SH were available to speak on IP issues.  It was decided that AH would ask K Liddell if she could also speak.  Action: AH.  AH would put Kathy in touch with MH and SH to further discuss and plan the structure of the session.  The latter could comprise two 20 minutes talks, with a debate afterwards.  Action: MH, SH.  AH to inform BSHG of the finalised arrangements when known.  Action: AH.
