SGPPH hosted a plenary session during the BSHG 2008 Conference on 15 - 17 September 2008. The session took place on Monday 15 September from 1400 - 1730 and was entitled: "Genetic Susceptibility Testing: Ready for Prime Time?" This session reviewed the recent science on common disease predictive markers and identified the next steps in making these findings relevant for consumers and clinicians. The development of the direct-to-consumer sector was discussed and the role of innovation and need for transparency. The development of these tests has had profound implications for policy makers and statutory authorities whose challenge is to adopt a proportionate approach which ensures equity of access whilst maintaining consumer protection and safety.
