Society for Genomics Policy and Population Health

4th AGM - 11 November 2009

SGPPH's 4th AGM took place on Wednesday 11 November 2009, at10am at the NCVO (The National Council for Voluntary Organisations), London.

This one-day meeting was based on the theme of "Genetics and Health Promotion". Its aim was to examine the links between genetic and lifestyle factors that influence our health from a range of perspectives. It included presentations from psychologists, social scientists, industry and public health clinicians to get a sense of how these complex factors are linked, and how best to use this knowledge in communicating key health promotion messages.  It included presentations on the relationship between genetic factors and addiction in relation to drug and alcohol consumption. It also examined genetic factors linked with obesity and the link between environmental and genetic factors in this context. The respective roles of genetic and environmental factors in influencing our perception of risk were examined. A representative from industry examined how the promise nutrigenetics may assist in developing healthier lifestyles in the future. The meeting also considered the wider social implications for genetics and public health, and more explicitly how genetic information is used in health promotion by health professionals and the media.

Speakers included: Professor Gunter Schumann, Dr David Gunn, Professor Robin Bunton, Professor Steve O'Rahilly, Professor Susan Michie, Professor Alan Maryon-Davis.  Click on the speaker's name to see their presentation.

Spring Conference 2009

The Spring conference took place on Wednesday 3 June 2009 at Mary Ward House, Tavistock Place, London.  Click here for a report on the meeting.

The meeting discussed:

"What is so special about genes?  Exploring the wider implications of genetics".

  • The purpose of this meeting was to examine how truly exceptional genes are. It examined some of the recent technological and scientific developments that threaten this view, and examined how industry and regulators have sought to accommodate the changing perception of genes within their practice.  It considered how other types of information (such as that on family history) can be used instead of genetic information as a predictor of disease and more widely in health care. Both genetic information and family history information are used by insurers and employers to predict an individual's future likelihood of illness and disability.
  • However, advances such as low cost genome wide scanning, coupled with population based research which are able to link genetic variants with common complex diseases such as cancer and heart disease, suggested a very different future. These advances and their likely implications for policy and regulation have been recently reviewed by the House of Lords Science and Technology Subcommittee Enquiry on Genomic Medicine whose report is due to be published shortly. The future impact of genomics on policy formed the subject of the final session of this meeting.

Speakers included:  Professor Sir David Weatherall, Regius Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford; Dr Berwyn Clarke Chief Scientific & Development Officer, Lab21 Limited, Cambridge; Professor Nadeem Qureshi, Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Primary Care, Derby City General Hospital, Derby; Lord Naren Patel, Chancellor of Dundee University; Dr Marisa Papaluca-Amati, Deputy Head of Sector, Human Pre-authorisation Unit, Safety & Efficacy of Medicines, European Medicines Agency; and Dr Virginia Warren, Consultant in Public Health, BUPA, London.
